Theme: You have been liberated … You have received the Spirit of Sonship

Readings: Rom 8:12–17; Lk 13:10–17

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, it is the will of Jesus that we should be free from both spiritual and physical infirmities. He took our human nature in order to liberate us, to stop us from being slaves to sin and from everything that possess a threat to our wellbeing. In keeping to his mission, in the gospel of today, Jesus liberated a woman who has been held captive for eighteen years by sickness. It is unfortunate that the Pharisees in that scenario didn’t welcome what Jesus did. This shows us that some people do not want their fellow human beings to be free from things that afflict their lives, they, in fact, draw joy and happiness when they make others suffer or when they see others suffering.

St Paul, in the first reading of today, reminds us that we have been saved from slavery to the lower appetites, we have received the Spirit of Sonship and have been elevated to enjoy the presence and fruits of the Spirit of God in our lives. As children of God and possessors of the Spirit of God, we have become bearers of the light of God and must reflect this light wherever we go, helping to liberate our brothers and sisters from whatever is still denying them their freedom and wellbeing on earth.

Peace be with you.
