SOLEMNITY OF ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY: REFLECTION BY FR. JULIAN EKEH
THEME: EXALTATION OF THE LOWLY
(Luke 1:39–56)
Today is the solemnity of the Assumption. It is a Marian celebration through which we call to mind the fact that at the end of Mary’s earthly life she was taken up body and soul into heaven.
We celebrate today, a taking up. Mary was taken up on account of her taking in, a taking in that was necessitated by her fiat. A fiat that made God to take up human nature. Mary thus did a donation of body. She gave what she had, what God gave her. Today God appreciates her for her sacrifice and takes her totally to himself for ever. For her humble regard for God, God regarded her lowly state and elevates her from nothingness to greatness.
Just as the body of Jesus knew no decay, so also the body of the one that donated to Jesus was never allowed by Jesus on account of the grace of Christ to decay.
It remains a mystery and yet a thing that calls for magnificat. What the almighty can do is beyond human limitation and explanation.
Let us like Mary humble ourselves before God. Let us give ourselves in life body and soul to God, so that in death He will take us wholly to Himself.
May God bless His word in our hearts.
LET US PRAY
Oh God, we thank You for today’s celebration. May we like Mary sing to the greatness of the Almighty who continually does great things for us.
May Mary assumed into heaven pray for us to her Son our Lord that we may, after our earthly sojourn enjoy eternally in heaven with them for ever and ever. Amen
God bless your day.
Happy Solemnity of Assumption
